Amazing what a few letters can do, eh?

Any special needs preschool worth it's salt will have OTs on staff and will provide it either in the classroom or as a "pull-out" session 1-5 times per week (or both), depending on the child's IEP. Both my kids received OT free of charge from the school. My DD was not in a special needs preschool and the district had an OT come to her daycare and our home.

As the school is now willing to help you ask (in writing) for a full OT evaluation (not a screening) for sensory issues, as well as a PT evaluation if you think he needs it on top of their usual series of tests.

Good luck!

I am a huge advocate, now that I've seen what it can do, for the spec ed preschool....at least our county's.

>>unfortunatly the school doesn't offer out of preschool OT services<<

That is flat-out illegal. Say a child needs OT but can handle a regular preschool (this was my daughter's situation), the school is obliged to provide OT outside of a special preschool setting because that is the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). The special ed board can advise you better on this stuff.

Also, consider investing in some noise reduction headphones like the ones used at shooting ranges for Gabe. If you carry a set of these in your purse or diaper bag, they can be brought out for those "Home depot" type situations.

I am going through IU but most people don't know what that is because they don't have intermediate units like PA does....so usually just refer to it as the district....I mentioned IU on another board one time and they didn't know what I was talking about....So the answer to your question...yes I am taking gabe to an IU program....when we transitioned from EI to IU they did an eval...it was way back in Nov....and gabe was 2.9 years old....and then we had the IEP meeting the beginning of Feb. which I refused to sign that IEP and ended up having EI extended till March...anyway...they told me then they don't do off site OT...and they didn't think he needed it...despite his EI OT saying yes he needs it...they gave me the run arounds....and even refused to do more then 30 min a speech a week....now they seem like they want to help more....so I again am going to ask about OT...because I do know the postive effects of OT with ST.....I have seen work with him in EI....and gabe is making strides...but they are little and slow to come...

we are supposed to meet with the austism specialists....but I have no idea when....i just feel like an hour of speech a week isn't enough for him....

thanks for your input on the special ed preschool....my mom also thinks it is something that gabe should be in....she is the director of his daycare center....

as for the sound thing in the store...he isn't acting like he is afraid...or upset by it...other then he has to keep telling me or signing that there is a sound....and I just reassure his that is okay...it is just a little noise and it won't hurt him...when we are in resturants and it is loud...he does get into sensory overload....and one way he deals with it is to shake his head back and forth....we don't ever make light of the head shaking thing....because I don't want it to be a habit...and it actually seems like it is centering him when he does it...so I think he is doing that as a way to regulate his own sensory issues....I might be way off on that I don't know...that's just what it seems like to me....
