I subbed in a different preschool classroom last Thursday. The associate teacher I was with has a 6th grader-- same school as Weston. She applied and interviewed for a para position in the autism program in our district (she didn't get the position) but she's very interested in learning more about autism and other language impairments. So, we did a LOT of talking.

She went home and asked her dd if she knew Weston. She does! They're on the same "team" and in the same homeroom. The mom said her DD had a very funny look on her face when she asked about Weston. So, the mom asked why? The daughter said, he's strange, we try to be friends w/ him or sit next to him at lunch and he gets all upset and is mean. So, the mom told him that Weston has autism--- she said her dd just brightened up and was "OH! that makes so much sense. I totally understand now. He's like the kids in our elementary school, except really smart." (she was in the elementary school w/ the big autism program) LOL! So, her mom said, now she's much more willing to understand and try to be friends or at least friendly w/ Weston because now she knows at least a little why he's mean and doesn't always act friendly.

So, I'm thinking even middle school kids need more differences training-- it would go a long way toward helping them understand other's points of view! I'm thinking the general MS population needs some 'training/therapy'!

Why stop at middle school?

As far as I can see the whole freakin WORLD needs it! But maybe that's just me...
