Wow, that type of program could actually work for mike! I wish we had one here.
There are some similarities to Cait's class but with more support. Cait's class is a full inclusion SDC for kids with HFA/AS. basically they go to the SDC class for study and social skills. They are also with thier SDC class for PE (not dressing out, BIG HELP) but they are fully included for all academics and there are aides that go into the classroom with the kids. usually an aide for 2-3 kids that are included in the same class. Some kids go without an aide if they can.
The problem with Cait's class is that the kids have to be included for academics. This was the one part that made it not an option for Mike. He is academically very able but he can't handle a regular class with loads of kids, the transitions, etc. If he had a class that was academically at grade level but separate he wouldn't have to be in a specialized school at this time.
I would give it a try.
My only concern is it seems the other extreme on inclusion from Cait's. If your guy can handle inclusion make sure he has that opportunity. Totally separating the kids out is no better than forcing them to be included when they aren't able. How much they are included really should be determined on an individual basis and not based on what is typical in the "program".
That sounds like a really nice set-up. My Ds has been mainstreamed through all his years of elementary school so far but I'm beginning to think that this has hurt him more than helped. We spend so much time every year educating the teacher on Asperger's and soothing her feelings every time he rolls his eyes and makes an inconsiderate comment that I'm just burnt out. Middle school starts in 2 years and I'm already anxious about it. How big is your school system? I would love to pitch this idea at the next PPT. At least get them thinking about how to best help these kids.

Renee
That sounds very similar to Kyle's program.
What do I think???
Wow, Wow, Wow, this is EXACTLY what Chris needs!
Renee,
I know what you mean. We did this mainsteam thing from K-4 without aide and it was a DISASTER.
Amy, Noah is so bright too. This could be decieving during placement. Yes, I have to look into this mainstream issue.
Lainie,
wow! that sounds fabulous! I hope it works for him!
