Screen time addiction help!!!

I potsed this on the bp board also.

So my latest issue with Liam is he is ADDICTED to the computer and computer games. It gotten so bad I actually banned him from it today. So you know what the lil stinker did......he played his Nintendo DS for 5 hours straight, (he did come up for air to eat dinner, but barely). I gave him loads of count downs to bedtime and that Nintendo would be gone. He totally lost it, I ended up having to take it and hide it before he chased me into my closet. He was LIVID.

He threatened me left right and centre; it was horrible, but I seem to deal with a similar tantrum each night no matter what.

The screen thing is getting ridiculous. He is an absolute addict; it has to be computer/tv/dvds or nintendo. Sometimes I can get him on the swings, but its only for a few minutes. With summer coming in fast I don't know what to do to entertain him without his addictions and the aggressive tantrums that will surely follow.

Any advice? btw: some of this is bp "stuckness" and some is ASD obsessiveness.

Dee

That is my son's big obsession also. It's the first thing he wants to do when he gets home from school. I don't allow him to play in the morning because if he does poorly in his game the folks at school will suffer mightily lol. I've tried setting limits also but when the time is up and their in the middle of a "Boss battle" all heck breaks loose. I've also tried slipping educational games in because I figured as long as he's glued to the screen he might as well be learning something. For some reason educational games are no where near as fun as Toon Town. uughhhhh. As much as I hate it, I can see that it DOES provide stress relief for him after school so right now as long as all the homework gets done I'm going with the flow.

Hi Dee, we were in the same boat as you (not totally there yet). But we give points for all the non monitor time. HE gets 1/2 hr of game time every day, but if he overshoots the time, then it comes off his points. Which means he has very little to buy new game catridge. Also, most of the time, we work towards a game catridge in mind and find out the price too. Try it, initially you have to remind his "carrot" a lot, but eventually they get used to it. Summer is a good time to do it. Also get a time timer and stick it in front of him.
