So, I just found out this morning that Abby failed her hearing test in her right ear when they did the test at the hospital.

Though Raphael did not fail his left ear took 3 times longer to get a result from than his right.,I was told that fluid in the ears from I guess living in it for 9 months can take a while to clear and that can cause some discrepency in the newborn hearing test.
I was advised to get his ears retested at around 6 months but told there was probably no problem.

Good point about the fluid in their ears...duh, never even thought about that! LOL

DH did say that a balloon popped yesterday and freaked Abby out...poor thing ;) I'm thinking she will be just fine when they re-check her...hoping anyways! :)

I agree, if there are so many false negatives, why even do the test?! Seems like it could just be done at the 2 month check-up or later, right?! I hope that they can get the machine to work this week!! Good luck!!

My JB failed one ear the first time they did the test, but they were able to repeat it before we left the hospital.

I think they like to do the test in the hospital b/c at least that's one time they have a "captive audience" ... trying to get every single baby later on, especially if it's not something routinely done at pedi/fam doc offices, would be a nightmare.

When Kaelyn was born she failed her hearing test 2 times in the hospital in just one ear. They figured that she had fluid in her ears and on the third test she passed. She hasnt had any problems since.
I hope that is all that happened with your JB.
Also Kaelyn was a c-sec so she didnt get squeezed so that might have attributed to the fluid in her ears. I dont remember if your JB was natural or c-sec but something to think about.

Good point! We do have to go to a different doc. office to get the test re-done, not at our normal ped office. I guess I am just wondering what they do for a newborn hearing test...guess I'll find out on Wed :)

Thanks, Aimee :) My JB was a vbac, so most of the fluid *should* have gotten squeezed out, but she also still had quite a bit in her lungs, so I guess having it in her ears too wouldn't be out of the question... I'll keep you posted and let you know how it goes on Wed.!
