We haven't started yet. We started ODS at 6 months on the dot. Sam doesn't show any interest at all! He doesn't try to grab my food and if I put a bite in front of his face, he looks right past it. I was willing to start earlier than 6mos if he showed signs of being ready, but he's almost 5 months and he's not ready yet. I will probably start with avocado and skip cereals.

I like avocado because it has a really smooth, creamy texture and it's packed with nutrients. It's a fruit, but it's not sweet. I would start with banana but it stopped up my ODS and that was miserable--I'll wait until I can mix it with something not so constipating.

This site gives more info on why avocados can be a good first food:

None of my kids have liked cereal. I've tasted it before, and it is nasty! Anyway, not sure when I'll start solids this time. I probably at some point in the 5th month. I am not looking forward to new foods that plug up her system though,,,that is miserable.

That's cool...I might have to try that. I got a really awesome blender for my birthday and I'm considering making my own baby foods.

Our doc pushes solids at 4 months, but I know this is actually poor advice and I tell her so EVERYTIME. We wait until 6 months to begin solids. We start slow and don't do them everyday. Then they sort of become a bigger part of life as baby continues to grow. I'm a big fan of baby-led weaning, which essentially means that as baby wants to start eating more solids she will. As a result, I don't do a lot of baby food. When baby can eat small bites of food, she will and at that time will start nursing less.

My oldest (now 7) really got into food at about 8-9 mos when she could self-feed small cubed carrots, shredded chicken, etc. My second had an undiagnosed GI issue and didn't really even get started on solids until close to 18 - 19 mos (we did try frequently but she vomited, choked, etc everytime ... even purees).

I think this baby will take solids more readily and more rapidly than the other girls, but only time will tell ... we won't offer her anything until she's at least 6 mos though.

My baby's 5 mos. We're starting this month. She loves her cereal and I'll either start with carrots, avocados or sweet potato. I think she's going to love something different. She gets SOOO excited about cereal time. Its so darned cute. Best of luck!

My doc ok'ed them at the 4 month appt, so we tried some pears and she gobbled a little jar down, then the next day she was uninterested and has been. But recently she has been diving for my fork as i'm eating, so i think she might be more interested again.

DD is definitely showing interest and some signs of readiness but we are waiting until 6 months to start. Still debating the cereal vs going straight to "real" food (probably avacado or sweet potato). We will definitely make the vast majority of her food :-)
