Hi Guys,

Just wondering when do you transition your baby from a crib to a toddler bed with the side rails?

I am expecting my second son on Christmas Day this year and we are deciding if we need to buy another crib from the new baby or can we use the existing crib for the new baby and then get a toddler bed for our current son.

I moved my 2yo into a toddler bed, because she figured out how to crawl out of the crib... It was really for safety reasons when we did it...

We transitioned our DS into a toddler bed probably 2 months ago. He is now 22 months, so at around 20 months. We decided to switch him over then because he was starting to try to put his legs over the top of the crib and we didn't want him to fall out. The transition actually went really easily for us, and he has slept better since. We converted his crib to the toddler bed, though, so we'll still be buying a new crib when this one comes.

I never used 1 but Olivia's tiny classmate still sleeps in his and he's 5. Olivia was inher crib till she outgrew it at 3. She would probably still be in it if she would fit because she loved her crib. Seems like most of my friends did it at 18-24 months. I plan on using 1 with this baby for as long as possible since he won't have a real room.

We skipped the toddler bed...seems like a bit of a waste to me...and put him in a twin bed when he turned 2. And added a side rail. My DS is a big boy and just would've outgrown a toddler bed way to fast.

I tried to transition my son from his crib to a toddler bed at 20 months b/c he kept jumping out of the crib and I didn't want him to hurt himself.

Age really doesn't have anything to do with it. The decision to move him to a different bed or not should be based on whether he is developmentally ready or not. If he sleeps better in a "big bed" than he does in his crib, then he may be ready. Do any of your friends or family members have a bed that you could borrow to see if he would do the switch ok before spending money on a bed for him?

Honestly, we didn't bother with a toddler bed.

DD and DS are 21 months apart. When I was about 5 - 6 months pregnant we took the crib gate off making it a toddler bed. Once she got the hang of sleeping in there we set up the twin size day bed in the same room with the bed rail on it and gave her the option of where she wanted to sleep each night. By the time ds was ready to move into the crib (around 3 - 4 months old) she was sleeping in the day bed full time and understood that the crib was now his.

Unfortunately no, they don't have a bed that we could borrow. He is super young - he is going to be 11 months in 2 weeks and its just odd - he sleeps well in our queen bed, sleeps well when he has a larger space but when he is in the crib he finds it hard i guess. I worry that he may fall off because he still rolls around alot in his crib while sleeping -- he doesn't know how to climb back into a bed either I don't think so that is another concern for me..
