Being a parent is so hard because no matter what we do there is always the fear that we didn't make the right decision & something will happen to our children. I have a friend who lost her son to swine flu & she often wonders if he would still be alive if she would have gotten him the vaccine. You just never know, unfortunately. Such a sad story for that family .

Don't forget about the babies who die from not getting the vax. Sadly, the media, especially bloggers, don't make a big deal about the children who die from lack of protection.

It's a scary story, but remember that sort of thing is rare. I don't know anyone personally who has had or who's child has had a bad reaction to vaccines. Like Sunni said, the media will latch onto the rarities and blow it out of proportion.

I am much more afraid of the diseases my daughter could get not gettin vaccines versus the rare instances like that.

I agree with the others - as tragic as that story is, I'd be much more afraid of my son getting one of the diseases that we vaccinate against than the vaccination itself. I think that story also illustrates why it's so important to have an open dialogue with your pediatrician - I expect him to help us evaluate the risks and to assist us in making informed decisions. That said, my heart breaks for that mom because I'm certain she will second-guess her choice and probably blame herself forever. So sad.
