Don't tense your muscles up during a contraction - it makes them hurt more!! Relax your muscles. Don't lay on your back - the contractions hurt even worse. Relax and just breathe through it - your body knows what it is doing. Don't fight it. Something else I read is to not tense up your kegal muscles when you push because it makes you more likely to tear.
