Prenatal Genetic Testing. What up.

I was wondering if anyone has gotten clear or strong advice from their doctor about what prenatal testing to have done (genetic).

My doctors gave me a bunch of pamphlets and said I had to decide by Monday (tomorrow).

Hi.. i am having the NT (they call mine sequential screening u/s) on friday. the only reason i am considering amnio at all is because i am over 35. I didn't even think to get this stuff at 21 when i was pregnant before. I think there's a 1% chance of miscarriage. Look at my post on appts. River put some statistics up. you can google all this stuff and there are posts on the over 35 pregnant boards with info also.

meant to say there's approx. 1% chance of m/c for CVS and amnio testing. sorry.

Thanks-- over 35 is my only cause for concern as well so maybe I should peek at that board!

no prob. I looked it up and I think as of today's stats, it's much lower than 1% chance.
1 in 350 chance of CVS causing a m/c and only 1 in 1000 (0.1%) chance with the amnio.

Most of the tests just involve bloodtests and ultrasounds, and I have pretty much gone with them because my insurance will cover it.

This is from a Community Leader post on the Pregnancy over 35 board i am on--i hope they don't mind me re-posting -- it was originally written in 3/08, but the basics haven't changed (other than the NT/FTS becoming standard for most women, not just the "Knocked Up Old Chicks").

Actually amnio is still 1/400 with most doctors for miscarriage. You can demand their statistics for complications. They both can cause a lot of complications, not just fetal death, which is all the statistics we are given usually ( and even their they are known to "fudge it"). Do either CVS or Amnio increase the likelihood of a healthy baby? Nope. Mostly they are so you can abort if there is a genetic issue. If you wouldn't consider it, then I wouldn't have them done.

Thanks so much for the advice, River! What a great idea to ask about the odds for the office/people I am actually dealing with!
