Question about labor

I keep reading some women on here (on other month EC's) talking about getting membranes stripped.

Did anyone have this done? i don't remember this so i guess i didn't have that and I went into labor naturally at 40 weeks exactly. It doesn't sound pleasant at all. I don't want that done unless its completely necessary. What are your opinions on this?

I did not have my membranes stripped.
My water broke @ 40w1d naturally.
Im not sure why some Drs do it.
I feel like when they start to mess with something that happens naturally unnatural things happen or things arent as smooth.

I have not had my membranes "stripped." With the first two, I was GBS+ - so stripping would increase the risk of infection.

It's not "pleasant", definitely not something you'd do for no reason :-)

I had it done a couple of times as an attempt to encourage the onset of labor. I don't really know if it had any influence at all though.

Did your doctor end up inducing? or did you finally go into labor?

(Back when my mother was having kids, I think maybe they thought it would work, but now, I don't think that they really believe in it.

Thanks River. I had my water broken in the hospital while in labor but never had them stripped or sweeped. I want to make sure i don't have that done. It sounds bad.

I had this done with all my pregnancies and have never gone into labor before 40 weeks, and have been induced on due date or after with 3 of them.. I would compare it to getting a pap smear.. Not pleasent and has never really helped me, but some women swear it put them into labor.. I'm not doing it this time, though...

I had mine stripped last pregnancy. I was 40 weeks exactly and dialated to 4 already so she stripped mine it felt about like a pap. I started having irregular contractions that evening which turned into more regular the next day and had him the following morning. The way she made it sound was she doesn't strip her patients membranes unless they are dialating good with no contractions. I was scheduled to be induced a few days later just in case but it worked for me and I felt like I got to experience a more normal labor than being induced.

I had this done with my second pregnancy, and it was not the most comfortable thing, i remember i had to hold my hubby's hand while the doc did..because it did hurt a bit. My doc asked me if i wanted it done, she gave me the choice..she explained that it might help me start my labor.. It didn't start my labor right away..and i am not sure if it even helped..but my water broke a few days later.

I don't remember getting it done with my daughter, even thought i was two weeks past my due date..but maybe i did..

Sweeping and stripping are the same thing. :)
