So we started Ashley on rice cereal on Wednesday (@ 5 1/2 months) and I noticed that she hasn't had a bowel movement since Wednesday night (@ 7:00).

She can have rice cereal every day, just watch out for things that can be binding (like bananas) and make sure you alternate them with non-binding foods.

So should I NOT be giving her rice cereal every day?

The blowouts shouldn't become a regular thing after she adjusts to the new foods. Just make sure she is still getting plenty of fluids, and be aware not to give her too many "binding" foods in a row.

Thanks for the input ladies! Ashley finally had a bowel movement on Saturday and it was a MESS!! Luckily it was while DH was with her and I was "sleeping in" ;)

I agree with everything Donna said. Bruce has always had slower bowels and his regular pattern was once every day or every other day up until starting foods other than the rice cereal. Now he goes at least once a day. We give him the oatmeal cereal some mornings instead of the rice cereal. Oatmeal definitely helps with bowel movements (at least it does for Bruce).

Constipation is a common thing when they first start solids, their digestive systems aren't used to it. BF babies can go up to a week (according to Jenna's gastro.). As long as she's still producing wet diapers and isn't uncomfortable or straining to go then all is probably fine. If she doesn't have any BMs by Monday, her belly gets hard and distended, or if her BMs are hard and dry then you can start to worry.

My first DS did have some bouts of severe constipation when he was little. We had to give him extra fluids (water) and when things got really bad we even had to give him straight prune juice.
