I'm in agreement with Kim. A single reading of 138/80 is generally fine. If that bottom number had been above say 85 or 86 or up to 90 or more then it could be cause for concern, but then again, like the others have said, bp will fluctuate depending on activity, stress, and etc.

I had severe pre-e in my last pregnancy so I am a bp taking maniac. I know my regular bp, which runs a bit low, and if either number goes up by 15 or more, I start to freak - if it remains there. To be actually considered "high" it does need to be over 140/90 on consecutive readings. Elevated is something to watch, but if it remains elevated or high then it could be cause for concern.

Since I had high BP before getting pregnant, i am worried about pre-eclampsia.

The top number is a bit high but the bottom number is perfectly normal. When looking at bp, it's important to take multiple readings because it can vary based on activity, nerves, anxiety, etc. As someone with chronic hypertension, my experience has been that the severity of the bottom number is generally a better indicator of potential issues. That's not to say the top number isn't important, but a single reading of 138/80 doesn't necessarily indicate any issues. Did they re-check it? If they blow it off as "a little high" (which is something I've heard a lot) insist that they check it again at the end of your appt.

It's a tad on the high side but I had that bp a few weeks ago and my Dr. responded with that it was a little elevated but nothing to worry about. He said that it can raise just ever so slightly from just being stressed or worried or irritated at something. This last appt. It was normal again.
