Advice on private adoptions

Our possible situation would be a private adoption and I have no experience with private adoptions. Would we get our own adoption attorney or lawyer? Would we be able to bring the kids home under legal guardianship until the adoption finalizes? Anything I should look out for, or know before jumping into the process? Is there a six month waiting period before you can finalize like with fost/adopt?
Thanks!! I feel pretty illiterate about the legalities of private adoptions!

I think I know the situation (I read the same blog and saw your comment), the person who writes the blog it should be able to give you more information on the specifics. I think it could vary depending on states and country of origin but she should know since she has a lot of experience with it.

I hope you're the family chosen, they sound like they'd be a good fit with your other children.

Connie:
I think private adoption regulations vary from state-to-state.

We were going to do a private adoption with the Michigan baby at 1 point but then decided against it for several reasons...mostly the issue of getting bmom counseling and also if it fell thru we'd loose all of our money.
But the laws were the same as if we had done it through the agency.

I think it varies by each state though.

I suggest this association when looking for an adoption attorney:

Hi Connie,

Agreeing with PP in short. I'd go with an attorney from the website kgirlsmith recommended.

The attorney with Evan's adoption had legal guardianship, we had physical guardianship until it was finalized. We were in MD, the adoption was in FL, and it was finalized in Jan due to a paperwork glitch (would have been December). So not every state has a 6-month waiting period for finalization. As long as the required post-placement visits are done, you can finalize.
