Booking last minute plane trips/hotel

Hey Ladies,

I need some advice from those of you who have done out of state domestic adoptions. We will fly out when our birth mom goes into labor and will have to wait up to two weeks for interstate commerce. Do you know of any airlines that are sympathetic to these last minute bookings and can offer a discount? For hotels, we are looking at La Quinta b/c we can earn points and our agency has a discount with them. We also plan on talking to the manager there.

Thanks!

We drove so I have no advice on the plane ticket issue.

When we planned to adopt in MI last summer we needed to make hotel arrangments and were told it could be 2weeks to 2 months.

By best advive would be to ask for the manager/supervisor of the hotel and airline, and explain your sitauation.
Ask ahead of time what the policies are, and get a name of the person you talked to.

Thanks! I agree that we should go ahead and make some hotel reservations and we can always start pushing back the days. Do you think we should start the first day on her due date for now? She was always on time or just a day over with her other two kiddos. The La Quinta we are looking at has 4 rooms that are two room suites and have a micro and mini frige. Homewood Suites is on my list along with Towneplace suites that has a two bedroom plus living area suite. I really wish the Extended Stay suites weren't studios. It is very important that we have the extra living area b/c Avery will be with us.

I'll call Northwest. I think they offer a discount for international flights for adoption so maybe they will do domestic also.

We have thought about driving but it is 15 hours and we couldn't drive straight through with a 3 year old. How far did you drive? And did you leave once PBM was in labor?

Thanks!

OH and does the clock start ticking for interstate commerce once we have placement or once baby is born?

We booked our hotel for one week ahead of our planned travel date and then pushed it back as needed. While I think we booked it thru a 1-800# for the main chain (Marriott extended stay suites - Homewood, I think?) we then worked with the local front desk for our hotel and their mgmt staff was WONDERFULLY accommodating.

We drove a total of about 24 hours - on the way there we had one overnight stop at my BFs (about a third of the way) and stayed for Thanksgiving dinner, LOL

Thank you!! We have decided to drive and if I need to come back quickly for work then I can come back with DD and DH will drive back with baby in tow. I start a new teaching position this fall and new teacher orientation is August 9th so we are cutting it close. I will have no time off for baby but am lucky that DH can work from home and MIL is nearby and will help out. Crazy times!!

I promise we won't skimp on the hotel. I will put some of our airline cost savings towards a good size suite. Thanks for the advice, Ladies!

I like your new plan. I called every domestic airline in anticipation of our travels for this adoption & every airline said they do NOT give discounts for domestic adoption flights, except Delta. They said "it depends, and we'd have to see what the flight situation is that day". Not the most helpful answer, but that's as of June 21, 2010.

GL to you!
