The Package Came today!

Just when i was complaining that it was taking forever for my package to come..it came! I was so excited to see it in the mailbox. I don't know what I was expecting...but I was kind of surprised that it wasn't too thick! LOL There is a lot to do in there, but definitely doable! I have a better idea of what to expect in the homestudy (they said a minimum of 2 visits to ensure safety of home). What surprised me most, and what has me stressing is the financial part. Man they ask a lot of questions about our income, debt, what we spend on food, clothes, and so for as well as, our liabilities, etc! I always "stress" about money, so I guess this should be no different. What if they don't like what we make and look at our debts? We are comfortable, but not rich by anymeans. We own our house and cars, but don't have RRSPs or investments (I know..bad us!). Is there a minimum that we should have? *sigh* I would hate to be rejected based on money! I guess i fear rejection! haha

I know it's a bit early, but I was wondering what they will look for (safety wise) during the homestudy. We are in safety mode because we have a toddler, but I'd like to be proactive ;)

Thanks! Now I need to find a good pen and get going!!

Don't know if your doing foster adopt or domestic adoption.

The actual home visit was almost a non-event.

Yay! Yay! Yay!

Just when you thought you couldn't wait any longer?!
I think the financial questionnaire is basically checking whether you have the financial means to provide for a(another) child. Another way to ensure permanence,They don't want you to get into more than you can handle and don't want the added stress of trying to find money to provide for the family when you are bonding/ attaching with your new child.

Our safety check included:
Making sure outlets were covered. Checking to make sure poisons(cleaners)& sharps like knives and scissors were out of reach. That we had carbon monoxide and smoke alarms.Kept medication locked up. Had a list of emergency #'s by the phone. kept any water hazards( pool/hot tub)gated & locked. Had a fire escape plan. Had a bedroom/ space for the child. Didn't have locks on the outside of bedrooms. When we did the adoption intake worker meeting, they booked us for the safety check I asked them for a copy of the safety checklist, if I can find it I'll add the list k?

Yay! Go figure that when I complain, it actually shows up!

Thank you for the ideas on the safety checklist. Its good to know what could be checked out :) A lot of those are done because Mason is so young. When we have our appointment I'll see if I can get a copy of their checklist. If you still have yours that would be great.

Thank you! It's a relief to know that the financial part shouldn't be so bad. It makes sense what you said about the income and bills!
We are adopting through the Children's Aid Society in our area, so that means we will be adopting a slightly older child (about 2 years old). We haven't looked at fostering to adopt. It's on my list of questions! I would foster a younger child with hopes of adopting, but wonder if my heart would be torn out if he/she went home..if that makes sense?
Thanks again for your input!

Thank you for your input! It's nice to hear that it's not such a "big" thing..this financial aspect. We both have stable income and not too much debt..so fingers crossed!
The journey is about to begin and I'm soo excited. I could hardly sleep last night, thinking about it...but I'm a nerd like that!! =P
