I know its a small thing but I'm thrilled to say I've been nursing and working/pumping for 6 months :) I thought it'd be hard when I went back to work but we are still going strong!

Newlywed I tried to start solids at 5.5 months too but he spits them out. We are still trying without much luck. Yet he will scoop up stuff off our plates and shove it on his mouth! He's gotten mash potatoes and salad in his mouth before we could stop him lol.

I hope the next 6 months will be down hill:)

Your baby shows signs that he is ready to simply bypass the puree stages and go straight to chunk foods which is the basic premise of baby-led weaning (not to be confused with child-led weaning, a method stopping BF'ing). Starting with purees became popular in the 20th century when doctors starting pushing solids very early (3-4 months) before babies typically have developed the ability to grasp foods. As a result, in Western countries it is assumed you have to start with purees first when introducing solids when in reality you don't. Thus you could simply allow your baby to grasp food off your plate and experiment with eating the solids your eating. Contrary, to what some worry about, there is little risk of your baby choking on any food they may pick up and place in their mouth. Babies have natural defenses that prevent the baby from putting food in their mouth prior to be ready to handle it and there is also a tongue-thrust reflex that will push food back out if they are not ready to swallow solid food yet. When a baby is ready to pick up food and safely swallow it, all the abilities needed to properly do so will developed such a the ability to grasp food, the ability to swallow food as apposed to their tongue pushing it back out as happens when you try and feed solids too early. Since your baby seems ready to handle chunk food, I would recommend you give up on trying to spoon-feed purees and allow him to simply to grab food from your plate or even better, his own plate. There is little reason you need to worry about stopping him from putting food from your plate in his mouth.

Here are some general rules for introducing solid foods whether they be purees or food chunks via BLW:
1. It is recommended by the AAP and most other pediatric medical groups around the wait till at least 6 months before starting solids. You do not need to start solids immediately at 6 months though if your baby is not showing signs they are ready or if they have extreme allergy issues. Generally, provided that they are still getting sufficient amounts of breastmilk. BF babies should not generally need solids as a significant part of their diet prior to a year. Your breastmilk will change as your baby gets older to accommodate your baby changing nutritional needs. Before, a year, solids are mostly for practice and introducing the baby to new tastes and textures.
2. Most solid foods are lower in calories then breastmilk ounce for ounce. If you do find at some point you have a special need to supplement your babies diet due to genuine weight gain issue then you should stick with solids know to be higher in calories (see links below).
3. If you choose to start with purees, you do not need to start with rice cereal or other "baby cereals". They generally do not have munch much nutritional value. It would be better to start with a whole-grain cereal such as oatmeal or you can skip the cereal all-together.
4. You only need to start with a single small meal of solids per day for the first two months. You should always breastfeed the baby first then offer them solids afterwards as solid foods should not replace any nursing sessions prior to a year unless your want or need to wean completely prior to then. Between 7-9 months follow babies cues up to no more then two solids meals per day. Between 9-12 months you can increase the number of solid meals to 3 i your bay is interested but the baby should getting no more then 25% of their daily calories from solids prior to a year. Babies need the majority of their food intake to be either breast or formula up till at least 12 months. If your baby is taking getting less then 25% of their daily calories then that is fine as it's perfectly normal for some babies to be slower on the uptake of solids.
5. You do not need to introduce cows milk at a year if your still breastfeeding. Cows milk has nothing nutritionally that makes superior to breastmilk at a year. It's does have benefits if your weaning from BF'ing or formula at year in terms of fats and calcium but even then, there are other possible sources for these fats and calcium if for some reason can't or you don't want to introduce cows milk then such due practicing a vegan diet or your baby has a cow's milk protein allergy.
