nursing a lot less

hello.

i was just wondering if it's normal for an 8.5 month old to decrease the amount he nurses. not only is he nursing less frequently he's also very distracted when he's nursing and he finishes sooner. i should add that he have started solids. he eats about two jars a day and usually has finger foods once too.

i have also found that if eats more solids he sleeps better at night (waking once instead of twice). is this his way of saying his body needs more than just BM or do i just have to find a way to keep him focused so he nurses more.

is this a phase that will pass?

THANKS

It is quite common for an older baby to become more distracted while nursing and have shorter nursing sessions. Sometimes they will even 'forget' to nurse as they get busy playing in their surroundings.

I agree it's really common for babies to get distracted at this age. In addition to the great ideas already posted, some moms try nursing necklaces. You can buy them online or make your own. Basically it's a sturdy necklace with baby safe items on it that the baby can play with when bf. Some moms do a similar thing by playing with the baby when bf. Something simple like repeating nursery rhymes or singing to help the baby focus on mom and not the surroundings.

Some babies will actually bf more at night during this phase b/c they are too 'busy' during the day.

Hang in there mama!

thanks ladies. i've made sure to get in at least two good feedings in a day, the rest are kinda snacky and fast. i've found that if i don't nurse him on the couch he does a lot better. 99% of the time i use to sit in the same spot on the couch. idk, maybe he was bored of seeing the same sights from there and was looking around for entertainment. so i've been sitting in different spots and it seems to help.

thanks so much for your help!
