Priobiotics to prevent thrush

I'm wanting to take priobiotics to prevent thrush while my son is on antibiotics for ear infections. I don't know how many to take though. The bottle that I bought has 20 mg pills. How many do I need to take each day and for how long?

Welcome to the board and thanks for stopping by! It's always a good idea to take probiotics whenever mom or baby have to be on antibiotics to reduce the risk of thrush. You were wise to think of us!

There's not an exact dosage for most probiotics. Typically probiotics are measured in billions of cultures rather than in mg. Do you see any information on that on your bottle? According to kellymom, "Various dosage recommendations range from 10-40+ billion active cultures per day. "  Are you planning on giving baby probiotics as well? Some stores sell probiotics specifically in a baby formulation. If you can't find those, some moms just open up an adult capsules, divide the powder into 3 portions and give one of those portions 3 times a day. Some moms mix it into solids or a botle of expressed milk but others just moisten their finger, dip it in the powder and smear it in baby's mouth. It's pretty flavorless so babies don't typically object much.

Here's a link with good info on this:

I hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

Also, when you get probiotics, try to get brands with the most variety of probiotics. They are usually listed, the more the better. And the types that require refrigeration after opening are generally more potent too.
