Thoughts on 11 month old issues?

Hi all...I haven't been around in a while, but I am having a possible issue with my 11.5 month old and wanted to see if anyone here had any thoughts.

My now 4 year old became very ill right at her first birthday (lost 2 lbs and was pretty small to begin with ... her official weight was less than 16 lbs at 12 mos).

About a week after I thought she was over it (she'd been nursing but apparently not well because she wasn't gaining weight when we went back in for a recheck), I got sick ... I was sick for 5 days.

The pediatrician was panicking (she also didn't eat solid foods and in fact we did see a feeding therapist for 6+ mos starting around 15 mos). I tried to keep everyone calm. I began nursing pretty much around the clock (she nursed at night anyway, but I literally pushed her to nurse during the day at least every 90 minutes to 2 hours). I pumped following each nursing. I used breast compressions when she was nursing.

And another week later ... we finally started to see her put some weight back on. I actually met with an LC to do pre and post feeding weights and get their take on things (including the not eating, which was a separate issue from the illness). They were really encouraging and said to do what I was doing.

Once she started to gain again, I cut back my pumping to just a few times a day and after a solid weight gain (2-3 weeks after illness we posted a full pound of gain), I quit pumping all together. That was HUGE gain for a 1 year old baby in 1-2 weeks, so clearly she could gain on my milk alone. Because of her eating disorder, I really was frightened about low milk supply because it literally was her only food and I certainly didn't want to start formula at 1 year.

I know it was a severe illness. I myself (also petite) lost 6-7 lbs in the 5 days I was sick, and I really was trying to eat some and stay hydrated. For several days after the symptoms ended, I was still not hungry. And I suspect that my baby girl went through the same thing.

I'd encourage you to nurse as often as you can, pump if you can just to help increase supply. Increasing demand - even at this age - will help to increase your supply. Your body just might take a bit more time to respond. But it will respond. At least mine did.

HTH. I know it can be very concerning, but I promise you can get through this. FWIW, this same little girl went on to nurse past her 3rd birthday and remained almost exclusively breastfed until sometime past 18 mos when she slowly began to eat yogurt / ice cream.

Hey Robynne! Hope you're all feeling a bit better. My general feeling is that babies know what they need. He may be trying to build your supply, or just feeling fussy. I would let him go and just watch wet diapers.
