Is breast feeding the same with a 2nd child?

I BF my daughter until she was 2 without any issues.  It was a great experience for both of us and she has now been weaned since June of last year.  Now I am pregnant with my 2nd who is due to arrive in July.  Any big differences I should expect?  Does it take the same amount of time to adjust to nursing again (soreness of nips, etc.)?

Thanks!

Caryn, welcome to the board and thanks for reaching out to us!

In most cases, breastfeeding a second child is much easier because the learning curve is less steep for you. Sure, the baby is still adjusting to life outside the womb and you do have another child to care for. However, you already know what a good latch looks and feels like and you already know the different stages that infants go through and how to deal with them. Most often, second time moms have more confidence in their parenting skills so caring for a newborn is just less daunting.

You'll do great!!

Thanks Dana!  I hope it's easier at the beginning.  My nips were SO sorry for the first month.  Just wondering if I should expect that again or not.

It's normal to have some degree of soreness the first week or so but it shouldn't be longer than that and it shouldn't be super painful. Is it an option for you to attend a La Leche League meeting in your area before the baby arrives? Do you know if your hospital has lactation consultants on staff who can help with your latch? Are there private practice LCs in your community that you can work with in person if you still have latch issues after hospital discharge? You're very smart to be thinking about this now and lining up your resources.

Thanks Dana!  I hope this 2nd time around is a little easier in the beginning.  There are LCs available at the hosptial I will deliver at.  They were very helpful the 1st time around so I will be sure to use them this time too.  There are LLL meetings in my area.  Most of them are during the work day so I can't make meetings but if I'm having any trouble after I have this baby I could attend during my 12 week maternity leave.  That's a great idea.
