I'm trying to learn as much as I can about Labetalol while breastfeeding.

Brande... do you have a board certified LC in your area that can get ahold of the book Medications & Mother's Milk, by Thomas Hale, MD (leading expert in lactational pharmacology)?

I have chronic hypertension also. I took Labetalol during my first pregnancy, (think my highest dose was 200 mg 2X/day) and switched back to it while TTC our second child and BF my toddler. In the meantime I had taken a mild diuretic, Chlorthalidone, which was a once a day pill -- that was the main reason I switched meds. In postpartum land, I was having trouble remembering a 2X day med! ;)

I'm still taking the Labetalol and have had no troubles with it, either maternal side effects or on my baby. It is supposed to be one of the safer BP meds out there, it's an old medication and has been studied for a long time. It works well enough on me so that during this pregnancy, I'm not really even being treated as high risk -- I'm 25 weeks and my BP hasn't gotten above 120/70. (They are watching me closely and ready to start the extra testing at the end of the 3T) My pediatrician hasn't had any problem with it either, though I think he was slightly happier with the Chlorthalidone as far as the baby was concerned.

Congratulations on your new little son! He is a darling!
