Cluster Feeding
Wed, 10-09-2013 - 11:37pm

My baby is 8 weeks old today. He cluster feeds every night from about 8pm-midnight almost non-stop. I get a few five minute breaks in between. My husband helps out a lot by asking if I'm thirsty or would like a snack during this time. But, sometimes my nipples get tender duing this time to the point where I end up warming up about two to four ounces of expressed milk to give my nipples a break. I nurse exclusively and only pump if my breast still feel full after the baby is satisfied during early hours in the day.

My first question is ; Is it normal for baby to nurse for such a long period of time? I know cluster feeding is normal but everyone I know who has nursed tells me that their children never nursed for such a long period of time.

My second question is ; What can I do to make cluster feeding time a little more comfortable for me? There is never any pain or soreness. It's almost as though my nipples just get tired.

Welcome to the board and thanks for stopping  by!

Yes, the cluster feeding you're describing is very much normal, even for such a long period of time. Here's a link with some good information about cluster feeding:

Continue to be really picky about the latch while he's nursing for so long. If you feel like you have just had enough, it's ok to offer the expressed milk. Most moms can continue to nurse for long periods without soreness though as long as the latch is sufficiently deep.

Most often, cluster feeding is behind moms by around the 12 week mark. Hang in there - you're in the homestretch!!
