Am I being cruel?

Hi, ladies. I have not posted at ivillage since my now 4.5 year old son was a baby. At any rate, I have a Q/concern regarding my now 7.5 month old dd. My dd has been exclusively breastfed since she was born on April 8. Her weight gain was great for the first three months or so, but after ~ 3-4 months, her weight gain became VERY slow (she just hit 15 pounds -- and as I mentioned, she is 7.5 months). My conclusion is that (a) she is a laid back baby and not very demanding when it comes to eating; (2) is naturally on the petite side -- has smallish hands etc.; and (3) just does not have much of an appetite .
At any rate, when my dd hit 6 months, I decided to delay the start of solids because I was afraid that the solids would really cause her to start rejecting breast milk in favor of the less nutritious early solids (applesauce, rice cereal etc.) I have fought long and hard to keep her at the breast and I really believe that breast milk is best in the first year. I would have no problem starting solids if I felt she would continue her uptake of breast milk until she was fully on board with solids (three meals a day etc.) However, she is the type of baby who will probably halve her consumption of milk once solids are introduced.
Am I being cruel/selfish in withholding solids this long? Developmentally she is fine (rolling, starting to crawl etc.) She is also happy and engaging. However, I am starting to feel like I am withholding something from her to which she is entitled -- different tastes, textures ... I also started fretting today because I wondered if I could be putting her health at risk. Is it possible that I am delaying the solids because she is my last and I want to maintain the nursing relationship as long as I can?
Has anyone else been through this? Both of my other kids started solids at around 5.5 - 6 months. My now 8 year old radically cut back on her fluid intake once solids were started, but my son did not. I suspect my little one will follow her older sister in this context.
Any thoughts/input to offer. Is 8 months a legitimate age to start solids? Have I put her at risk in any way? I just started her on PolyVisol with iron for the iron primarily.

I don't think you're being cruel ... many babies don't start solids until later.

My pedi practically threw a celebration when my DD hit 16 lbs at 9 months.
