Both my nursling and I are on Amoxicillian. I know we are at risk for Thrush, but when I asked our pedi, they said to eat yogurt and call if baby developed white patches. HELLOOOO??!?!?!? I don't want it in the first place. My questions are what Probiotics should I use, how much, just me or baby, too? Is there anything else I can do to prevent Thrush? GV was suggested, but the mess is throwing me off unless I absolutely need to. I don't usually get a yeast infection myself from antibiotics, so am I at less risk? TIA

Goodness gracious, my apologies that your dr.'s was so clueless about that. Yes, every time mother or baby takes antibiotics, both mother AND baby should be taking probiotics to reduce the risk of thrush. Yes, you're at lower risk because you're not prone to yeast infections but by no means off the risk. You can purchase acidophilus just about anywhere these days. I think we got ours at Target. Here's a link with some good info: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/thrush/preventing-thrush.html

I'd recommend taking 2-6 capsules per day yourself. For baby, divide the powder of one capsule into three parts and give baby one third of the powder 3 times per day. You can mix it in with solids if you like or just dip your wet finger in the powder and smear it on the inside of baby's mouth. That's what I did and it worked just fine.

I wouldn't recommend gentian violet unless you have active thrush already. It can be a mess and is overkill just as a preventative measure.

Hope that helps!

Your doc recommended yogurt because yogurt contains probiotics (even if you don't buy the probiotic kind). Most yogurts contain more than one kind of live, active culture, but acidophilus is the most common one in yogurts. If you read the labels on yogurt, it will typically say something to the effect of "contains live active cultures" and may include the type / quantity.

Taking probiotic capsules will get you a higher concentration of the beneficial stuff but many people find yogurt is adequate. Nothing wrong with doing both.

My kids eat a ton of yogurt but I also give them probiotic tablets ... but if we miss a day, I'm not too concerned because they do eat so much yogurt.

On this note, I just wanted to make sure I understood correctly (as I am currently on ANBX):

That is correct. If mom is on ABX then BOTH get probiotics. Also if only Baby is on ABX then BOTH should still get probiotics.
