Decrease in supply

Hi!

I wasn't sure where to post--my DD will be 6-months in less than a week, so I decided to post here instead of the above folder.

Madeline has been BF since birth. No formula supplementation. We had our ups and downs but it has gotten pretty consistent over the past 2 months.

At appox 3 months, I was being tracked for post partum thyroiditis. At that time, I was severely hyperthyroid. They continued to track me (no meds) until about 1 month ago, when tests showed I was severely hypothyroid. So, based on that and other test results, I was started on medication for hypothyroidism on Sunday.

On Monday, I woke up and I started feeling like I was getting my period. I felt horrible. Everyday since I still feel like its coming but it has not. Additionally, since that time, my milk supply has been going down. I went from pumping about 1-2 oz in the AM and 1 oz in the evening (I am a SAHM and feed her all day) to gradually pumping less and less--this morning I literally had drops out of my RB and none from my LB. I have pumped a total of 4.0 oz since Tuesday. The Dr. says the meds have nothing to do with it. But it is just odd. I haven't changed anything about her feeding--no solids yet, no decrease in ## of feedings during the day or night

Hi Stephanie-

A few quick questions:

Have you replaced any pump parts reccently? Have you increased the number of nursing session? Taking fenugreek or oatmeal at all?

Yes, ovulation can diminish your supply, but there are herbs you can take to help with that. Cal/mag, I think??

Follow up and we'll go from there, okay?

Thanks so much! I appreciate the quick response.

Since this just started, I haven't taken anything. I am a little hesitant to do so as oversupply was an issue for me for a long time, leading to 4 bouts of mastitis. I feel like I finally have it under control now, so it makes me nervous. Once I menstruate, will it go back to normal then? Should I just take the cal/mag during the cycle (FYI: I haven't had a period yet, so I am not sure it is coming--i just feel like it is)

I haven't replaced any pump parts lately. Which parts do you recommend? How would I know if something is off??

No nursing sessions have been

Yes, the supply usually comes back up. With a history of oversupply, you might just want to see if it bounes back on its own? You could always see if just eating oatmeal during the few days a month helps.

You'll want to replace the valve membranes...the thin, yellow plastic things. With use, they can get microscopic tears that can affect the suction.

More sessions should help after a while, since milk production is supply and demand. Here's the info on the calcium (the cal/mag combo is for sore nipples during ovulation): http://www.kellymom.com/herbal/natural-treatments.html#calcium
