Drop in %tiles & refusing solids

Help! At DS's last Dr. visit he went from the 75% to the 25th percentile in height. He was in the 5th% for weight but now he dropped off the chart. The Dr. wants to increase his solids but DS is refusing all solids. He would take a couple of spoonfuls of rice cereal but now he clamps his mouth shut when he sees the spoon coming near him. I have tried feeding him off my finger and even giving him the spoon to feed himself. Nothing helps.

The other option would be to supplement with formula but I'm totally against that. I would rather push the solids and continue nursing. I thought that he would have at least maintained since he's been nursing every 2 hours including during the night. What can I do? DS is now 6 months old.

Is he gaining weight and height? Is he having plenty of wet/poopy diapers? Is he meeting milestones?

If the answers are yes, then you probably should think about actually completely cutting out solids for now. Very few solids have as many fat and calories as breastmilk, so don't have much chance of helping with the weight gain. Two that I know are good are avocado and banana, so you might try one of those. But, if he's refusing solids, he's most likely not ready, even though he's hit that "magical" 6 month mark.

I was going to say the same thing as the previous poster about solids. I will just add that perhaps your doctor is not using the WHO growth charts which are solely based on breastfed babies.

Here is a link to the WHO charts:

Isabel, I agree that now might not be the time to push solids - however - will baby eat avocado? Cause if we recommended any solid in a time like this, it'd be avocado :)

You've already seen this I assume (if not it may help, and if so, perhaps it'll help lurkers):

Thanks for the info. I will try to answer the questions posted. I think DS's output is normal. He probably won't eat avacado I can only get him to suck on a banana. He is gaining weight, he actually gained 1.5 pounds in the last month. The other issue is that he's waking every 2 hours at night to eat and I'm totally exhausted at work. I actually fell asleep pumping the other day at work! DS is teething and getting over RSV so I'm hoping he will go back to sleeping well once he's better.

Hi there-

DD made the exact same drop...this article explains the percentiles aspect a bit more. http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/growth/growthcharts.html

If he's just gotten over RSV and he's teething he could have lost some of what he had gained.

Oh yeah, if he just got over RSV it is no surprise at all that he dropped percentiles. My son did the same thing because he slept so much while sick with RSV and he threw up a lot - he lost almost 3 lbs. He dropped from the 95th percentile to the 80th. Luckily he is a hearty boy. But that illness really set him back. At this age they gain about 2-4 ounces per week, so it sounds like your son is doing fantastic with weight gain. Might just be a bit small. Did you check out the breastfed baby growth chart links?

I did check the breastfed baby growth chart and he's right on track. Thanks for the info! You're right about the RSV as well. The reflux was horrible. Seemed like DS nursed hourly but threw up a lot. All those extra calories went into fighting the illness instead of growth. That along with the antibiotics for his ear infection he was pooping it all out. I think we're finally in the clear. Of course DD woke up with a runny nose yesterday so I think we'll just be sick all winter.

Hi Isabel,

I have not read the other entries so I appologise if I am repeating something another poster has said. It is pretty normal to have a drop in percentiles. Especially when the doctor is using hte old charts.

That being said, refusing to eat solids can be a classic sign of acid reflux. My little Cameron is going through that right now. You can check out my blog here http://wbfamily.blogspot.com/search/label/Cameron and start at the bottom if you would like to see if it sounds simmilar. I would be happy to chat with you more about it.

Warmly,
Saje
