I have not been the best about rotating my freezer stash and have now found myself with mostly older milk in there- I know, not a good planner!

I do need to pull from the freezer for an ounce or two each week as my pumping supply is a bit lower than it used to be on some days (I work full time and he is only on breastmilk

That is so helpful- thanks!

Yes, it is a side-by-side freezer. I have kept it in a dedicated large section of the freezer and it has stayed nice and cold the whole time.

I inventoried my stash and most of the milk is from April, making it 6-7 months. I had oversupply back then, so there was loads of it! It all has been smelling fine and he has not reacted badly to any of it when an ounce or two is mixed with mostly fresh.

I'll keep thawing and sniffing as I need a few ounces here and there!

Thanks!

DO NOT throw out any milk unless it smells or tastes really BAD/sour.

I am assuming the milk is in a top/bottom or side-by side fridge/freezer. Ideally yes it should be used before 6 months.

In a stand alone freezer it should ideally be used within 12 months.

It is not like at 6 months and 1 day (or 12 months and 1 day) the milk suddenly goes bad or is suddenly turned into kool-aid. If you need milk and it has passed the date just make sure it smells okay. IF the bulk of baby's milk was older milk it might be more of a concern, but a little every frew days or even a little every day should not present a problem at all.

FWIW, the other day I was cleaning out the freezer in preparation for picking up 2 hogs at the processor. I found a bag of BM from 2006!! I thawed it out because I was curious and it smelled and tasted fine. DS #3 (who is 5 months) had a few sips and didn't complain either. Was it as nutritious as it was 3 years ago? Not likely. WOuld I use milk that old in an emergency? If it smelled okay and tasted okay I probably would. IMO it is better than formula.

HTH!
