Help! I need flagyl information
Sat, 05-30-2009 - 7:13am

I have a very bad bacterial infection and my doctor has prescribed Flagyl. I want to take it but I'm still breastfeeding my 23 month old. I've been attempting to wean him (much to no avail! I need help on that too). So I haven't begun the medication for fear of harming him. The infection is pretty bad, but I cannot wean him. What I need to know is if Flagyl is harmful to toddlers?

Please help soon!!!

Hi mama! Flagyl is considered an L2 or 'safer' medication as per Dr. Thomas Hale. Melanie gave you great info. Here is an exceprt from Dr. Hale's forum:

"Flagyl (metronidazole) use in breastfeeding is somewhat controversial, as the levels in milk are rather high. However, these levels are no where near the clinical dose commonly used to treat C.Difficle in infants.

I'd suggest it's quite safe for your infant. It might however, impart a metallic taste to your milk, and the infant may not like it.

Tom Hale Ph.D."

If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to post back. I hope you are better soon!
