Hemoglobin Levels? My pedi told me...

Asa is 9 months (actually almost 10, *whew*!) and I just had his 9mo appointment today. My pediatrician told me that Asa's hemoglobin levels were at 11.5. They should be above 11 but she didn't want them to get any higher. They get higher b/c of breastmilk in his system (I am totally saying the dumb-layman's version of this, btw). She suggested I cut out one of my nursing sessions so his hemoglobin levels don't get too elevated.

I've never heard of this. What's the deal?

ps--I nurse him 4x/day and 1x at night.

What?! I've never heard of that, either. Usually the ped is too worried about it being low. I'm not finding much on a google search, and the only stuff on kellymom is re: iron being too low.

The kellymom article actually shows that between 6-9 months, the iron level is usually between 10.5-15, with 12 being average.

I’m confused as well! Are you sure the ped said that the number should not get higher or did s/he say higher and really mean there was concern about it getting lower? Maybe the doctor misspoke?

Thank you. I think I will call her back. She wasn't like adamant about it or even "make sure you do this...". She just said normal is 11 and his was 11.5 (to which I thought, "so?"). And at first I was confused b/c I thought she was talking about cow's milk. Like he had too much cow's milk in his system. Then I had to clarify and said, "breastmilk?" We kind of didn't finish that conversation b/c when she said to cut one feeding out, I said, "Well, I wish he didn't wake up at 4am every morning to eat..." And then we got on a sleep conversation.

So. I thought I'd ask you guys and am VERY surprised at how very weird that advice does sound. (I will say that at Asa's 6mo appointment she said very matter of factly, "Breastmilk is not adequate at this age. Make sure he's eating blah blah blah..."

OK. After I talk to her I'll report back!

THANK YOU. I really love and appreciate this board. You guys have helped me so much!
