I'm a teacher...I go back to work in a month...my baby will be just over 9mo when he goes to daycare. I pumped for him last semester, not problem. And I'll do it again this semester if I have to, but I've been reading and a lot of the literature says it is okay to give a little cow's milk (homo) at this age if he's going to continue nursing, which I more than expect to be nursing a bunch in the evenings and nights with him. That's what happened with my last one (though she wasn't in daycare until after a year old.)

Anyhow, my provider has said, don't forget he'll probably need something for a bottle for naptime, etc, and we definitely don't want to give him formula (dh is probably a bigger bf advocate than I am, lol).

So what do y'all think? I haven't decided to HUTH yet, but I do want to see what feasible options I have.

tia!

eta...he does eat some table food, at least a meal a day. We skipped infant cereal and baby food and went pretty much straight to cream of rice and small pieces of acceptable foods.

I had a lot of issues with my daycare declaring what my DD needed and ignoring me (and my DD was the only one still nursing at 8 mos when I quit, tells you what they knew about bf'ing...), so please understand that my comments are always going to be colored by that experience.

I am a school admin and also teach and trust me I know what a hassle pumping is. As much as I love nursing, I dread having to fit in pumping at work and feel like I count the months with the dreaded pump!

I don't think I would do cow's milk this early. As the pp said, there is mixed research on it and some ped's may say to go ahead, but it is not really clear that is a good idea. I think 9 months is a bit early.

I would think you could work on reverse cycling- so you don't need much during the day but nurse a ton in the evening and night- and perhaps as was mentioned pump in the AM before you leave the house for a daytime bottle.

I would think at 10-11 months, you could maybe introduce cow's milk a bit early, but at 9 months I would think you still want primarily bm with a few solids.

Sorry I can't give you that pump-free support!

thanks for your perspectives! in my heart of hearts, i know i need to keep pumping for him, and so i will. but only once during the day...if daycare can't get by with what i can make in one setting, they can give him a little water. :-)

NAK

Robanne -

I know it is not what you wanted to hear, but I really would not recommend the cow's milk this early (9 months).
