DS Alex is almost 8 months old, and I just came down with mastitis for the 8th time (or 11th, if you count the 3 times I had it with DD).

I'm so sorry! Mastitis is the pits!

I think it would be a good idea to talk to the doctor about it. Sometimes repeated bouts of mastitis mean that the oringinal bout wasn't treated long enough with antibiotics or with the wrong antibiotic. It might be helpful if the doctor does a culture of the milk to see exactly what is growing there and what medication will help best. Maybe you need to be on a low dose of antibiotic for a longer time.

Maybe you have another health condition that needs to be addressed that is making you vulnerable such as diabetes, or an inflammatory/autoimmune disease.

Be persistent with your doctor that you need help with this. Hope you feel better soon.

I agree with Kathy that there may be a deeper problem here.

One thing that stood out to me was that you said you took a week long course of antibiotics. Generally Mastitis needs at least 10 to 14 days and the antibiotics of choice are Keflex, Dicloxacillin, and Erythromycin.

Also besides the lecithin what else have you tried? Acupuncture can be helpful for mastitis. Also there are homeopathic remedies. Have you taken any general immune strengthening treatments?

This link has more about recurrent mastitis and also more links at the bottom. http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/recurrent-mastitis.html

Thank you both for your input! When I first had mastitis with Alex (he was only 6 days old), I took Dicloxacillin but still had a 104 fever after 3 days. So then I tried Keflex, but still no improvement after 2 days. So then I tried Clindamycin and that worked very quickly. I've used Clindamycin ever since, and it always gets rid of the mastitis within a day or so. But the doctor always prescribes only 7 days, so this time I asked for 14 days. Maybe that will help get rid of it for good. Fingers crossed!

I've tried echinacea and B6 for immune boosting. I've been all over Kellymom but somehow missed the Hepar Sulphur/Phytolacca homepathic remedy. What is that stuff?

I'm also intrigued by this from Kellymom:

"If you follow the complete course of treatment with an appropriate antibiotic and the mastitis continues to recur, Dr. Ruth Lawrence (Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession, page 281) suggests long-term, low-dose antibiotics for 2-3 months or even the duration of lactation. This type of treatment has broken the cycle of repeated mastitis for some women. If this treatment is chosen, it's also a good idea to have an antifungal medication prescribed along with the antibiotic and/or to supplement the mother's diet with acidophilus to lessen the risk of thrush."

Do you know anyone who has tried that? The risk of thrush makes me nervous. I'm currently taking Align probitics and giving the kids version of Culturelle to Alex.

Thanks again for your help!
