New with question re: daycare & EBM

I’ve never posted to this board before but have always lurked and have always found my concerns/questions answered. I’m sure this has been discussed before but I can’t find it in recent history. So here it goes and thank you in advance for reading this!!

I’m going back to work full-time in September and am currently in the process of transitioning my LO into daycare. I have been exclusively BF Liam since birth (he’ll be 1 on Sept 9th) and have never used bottles so I’m trying to avoid them. I also want to continue to BF him until at least 2 yrs old. Since 6 months old he has been using a sippy cup for water at meals and now is a pro at them. I’ve also given him some breast milk in it too and had no problems with him drinking it. My problem is that I figured I could just pump and give Liam breast milk in sippy cups at daycare but he won’t really drink them there. I don’t understand because if I give him the cup he takes it and drinks it without a problem. I’ve thought that maybe it is due to the distractions and have asked them to hold him and sort of treat it like a bottle right now to make him drink it. That seems to be working but he still isn’t drinking the amount I would like him to have. When he is with my I nurse him every 2-3 hrs and we cosleep so he nurses all night long so should I be concerned about the amount of breastmilk he is getting at daycare if I’m sure he’s getting enough the rest of the day? I was thinking of giving him 2 x 4oz sippy cups of breastmilk for a 7am-3:30pm day, is that enough? If he should be drinking more should I just give up on sippy cups and just give a bottle? TIA!!

I think your plan with sippy cups sounds like a good one for you and for him.

The general rule of thumb is one ounce of bm per hour. It sounds like he is at daycare for 8.5 hours, so about 8 ounces should be about right. My DS does a bit more than 1 ounce per hour, but he sleeps most of the night so he is not getting as much then.

My DS has been at daycare since 3 months old and still struggles with bottles- particularly on Monday's or after any stretch at home. I think some babies do better than others taking bm from something other than mama.

I have always felt comfortable that he will make up for any missed bm during the day while with me at night. If he is hungry, he will probably eat more in the evening. As long as he is getting something to keep him hydrated and ok, I would not worry. It sounds like that is the case. You should be able to track diaper output as well just to feel comfortable his overall 24 intake is still good.

I bet he also gets more comfortable with the routine over time. After a month or so at daycare, both of my boys settled more into the routine.

Thank you for your reply. Actually yesterday he did drink all the BM I left for him so he is getting better about it. I really was just upset that that the sippy cups weren't working cause I really didn't want to introduce bottles at 11 months old. I agree with you though that he will makeup for any missed amount in the evening especially since he nurses 2-4 times during the night. Thanks again!
