sudden nursing and diaper problems

I think this might just be the beginning of teething, considering my LOs age, but I thought I should get another opinion on this.

We exclusively nursed for just short of 6 months, then started slowly introducing baby foods. We've been doing one a week, so we haven't done too many yet. Now, all of a sudden, we're having two problems, one with me, one with her. She's getting horrible, nasty diaper rashes every time she has a BM. I'm talking bleeding (just a little) diaper rashes even if it's only been a little bit since her BM. We're cding, so I've been using zinc oxide creams, which seem to help clear things up, but just until the next BM. Not good.

Second problem, I'm suddenly sore again, on both sides. I've been getting blisters, mostly on the right side (our 'easy' side). She's been popping off (literally! ouch!), wanting to nurse more often and for shorter lengths of time. I've been trying to make sure our latch is good, but it doesn't seem to be working too well, as I'm waking up in the morning sore (we co-sleep and she's been nursing once or twice a night, which is actually down from 2-3x per night).

We also just got over a cold. I don't know if that woud be helpful to know or not.

Any advice?

Just a quick thought before I have to put my oldest down for nap and feed the baby. Could this be yeast/thrush? Yeast rashes can be really horribly red and nasty, and are sort of known to make the bottom so raw that it bleeds. That could also be a cause for sudden change in nipple tenderness.

A few questions and I'm sure others will be by to help:

You said you just got over a cold. Were either of you on antibiotics?
If you look along the edges of baby's rash, are there any little spots that are sort of scattered along the edges?
Any white areas in baby's mouth, particularly on the inside of the cheeks or roof of the mouth?

No, neither of us were on antibiotics. There are no spots (pimple-like things, right?) of any kind. The entire area inside her little bum is red with parts that are a little worse than others.

There is white inside her mouth, and we were being treated for thrush a few months ago, but I haven't been having any problems for quite some time. I think she's had white areas in her mouth all along, though.

My two thoughts on the rash were:

1 - yeast
2 - food allergy

If you really don't think yeast is the issue (but think about it since you also are experiencing breast soreness too), consider what foods have been introduced around the time of the rash. Cut out the food and see if it makes a difference.

Sorry I don't have more help. Just sharing a couple quick thoughts.

I looked up some pics of babies with thrush & it doesn't look anything like my LOs mouth. I'm pretty sure my soreness was from bad latch, that's what it felt like and it's clearing up along with the blisters. We've cut squash from DDs diet and we're going to wait until she's older to reintroduce it. I don't really want to tag this as an allergy, I think the squash is just making her BM acidic. I was thinking she might be teething, but she's not really showing any teething signs.

Thanks for the suggestions & advice.

My vote is actually just for teething. My babies didn't, but I do know several babies who had super loose bowel movements because of teething.

Jason was an atrocious teether and he nursed NONSTOP when he had a tooth coming. His saliva also caused me sore nipples during those times too.

Good luck!
