Sudden Problems. Teething? Thrush?

I've been BF'ing for 10 months with no problems at all. We never had any trouble in the beginning with cracked or painful nipples, but now, at 10 months, I all the sudden have horrible pain in both nipples and areolas during every feeding and for a while after he's finished. This has been going on for about 2 weeks.

I've finally bought some lansinoh cream and have been applying that after every feeding. It seems to be helping somewhat...by the end of last week I was in tears when he first latched on, and with the cream, I'm at least not crying, but it's still pretty painful.

I've looked a little on Kellymom.com to see what this could be caused by, and all I can think of is maybe teething (he doesn't bite me, but with 4 teeth on top and 4 on bottom, they're probably rubbing against the nipple) or thrush. I'm not even really sure what thrush is, but I've heard of people having it. I've looked at the pictures on kellymom.com and my LO seems to have the whiteness in the mouth that looks a little like the pictures on the website. The thing is it seems to come and go, so I don't know if I'm just seeing things. I'm just not sure.

If anyone has any advice or has had any experience with this, please pass on any info that you think would be helpful. I'm not sure what to do and this pain is unbearable.

Also, who would you call about something like this: your OB, a general practitioner, or a lactation consultant. I'm just lost as to what to do. Thank you all so much!

Hi there-

((HUGS)) to you, mama! It definitely sounds like thrush to me, unfortunately. For lurkers, I wanted to post this: http://lactinv.com/breastfeeding_qna.php?article=tscreen

Is there an IBCLC in your area or can you call your doc? You'll likely need a script for Nystatin or Diflucan. BOTH you and baby will need to be treated, even if one of you doesn't have any symptoms (sounds like you both do, but it's an important point to make).

STOP using the lanolin...it harbors yeast. You can use GV or APNO for the pain.

These are some good threads with thrush info:

Thrush treatments can seem really overwhelming (IME). So, please post back if you have more questions or need clarification, okay?

Thanks so much for your response. There is an IBCLC in my area and I will be putting a call into her. I guess I'm still hoping that this is just a problem with his latch or his teething. I have a lot of pain, but looking at the articles from your post, I think I'm lacking some of the symptoms of thrush. My areolas are red and sore, but after feedings, the tip of the nipple is actually white, like its blanched. And the articles that I've read say that the tip of the nipple would be red and flaky. I guess I'm just not sure, but thank you so much for your response and help. The articles that you attached were very helpful.
