Thrush! :(

If you have been following my saga titled "Pain on one side" you'll know that I have been experiencing some pain on the left side. I finally got the lactation consultant on the phone today and she said she is positive that it is thrush. I called my OB and DD's ped and they are both calling prescriptions for us... Besides that, is there anything else I need to know about it? How long will the intense pain last??? Is DD in any pain? (I don't see any white stuff in her mouth and she has continued to nurse normally which leads me to believe she knows nothing about what's going on.) Do we need any home remedies or will the meds be enough?

Thanks for all your help!

Can you let us know what they prescribed for each of you?

While waiting to hear back on what treatments they are giving you, here is a link on different things you can do, comfort measures, etc:

Both Ped and OB prescribed Nystatin for us... I assume in different formats. The OB also prescribed an ointment for me... something that starts with "Dy____"- DH is picking both us in a bit. Here are my questions...

Do we need to change our diet? I read somewhere about no sweets/yogurt... DD loves yogurt... is that really necessary? Neither one of us has sweets so that's no prob. Secondly... someone mentioned acidophilus... what is that? Do we need it? Where do we get it... etc.

And lastly... I noticed that I have a crack right next to my nipple... I think that's adding to the discomfort... should I just apply the ointment over that?

I really appreciate all your help... I refuse to give up on breastfeeding at this point... :)

Pati-

Dang, I'm sorry that's what it is. I was really hoping it was something else. At least now you can treat/fix it properly. Ugh!

Dy...Diflucan? If so, that's good. You should be given a MINIMUM of 10 days. Nothing less will work. I think it comes into a pill format, though, not an ointment. I could certainly be wrong.

You should be given different types of Nystatin...that's good. Many prescriptions show to apply 4 or 6 times a day. That is too few. Apply it after every nursing session. Yeast starts growing back on 90 minutes, so you can see that even 6x a day won't work.

Sweets, yes you might avoid. However, I think yogurt is usually encouraged as long as it has 'live active cultures'. That is the 'good yeast'. We would recommend you also start acidoliphus. This link has a lot of great info and includes info on acidoliphus: http://breastfeeding.hypermart.net/thrush.html

I will post again when DH gets home with all the goods... he's on his way now... should I have him get some Acidophilus? How much would be enough for baby and me? Would we need to take this for 10 days as well? Do we need a prescription?

Thanks for all the help!

Here is what we got:

For DD- Nystatin: give 1.0 ml into each cheek 4 times a day for 2 weeks
Fo me- Nystatin: apply to affected area 2 to 3 times a day til area healed & Fluconazole: only 1 150 mg tablet and it says "take 1 tablet now".

I also had Dh pick up some acidophilus... I know that link Paula gave me says two capsules three separate times a day for me... but how much should I give DD if any? Is it necessary for her as well?

What do you think of the doses and frequency? Let me know if I need to change anything...

Thanks!

Pati, sorry its so late (actually I should be in bed already but wanted to do this in case I go to hospital early tomorrow)...I hope I remember all that I wanted to post to you LOL

Lets see.. healing tips:

Here is the APNO, script version:

http://www.kellymom.com/newman/03b-treatments_sore_nipples_breasts.html#apno

we make our own OTC (as per LC) using lotrimin, polysporin and hydrocortisone ointments - we got generic lotrimin, and used a dollar store measuring spoon (1/8 measure) and put equal squirts of each into small container. We blended well with toothpick and apply this after each bf.

The baby's Nystatin comes with a dropper... she will drink the medicine but won't allow me to swab her cheeks with it... I don't really know what to do. Will drinking it help at all? She's quite stubborn and I don't think she'll let me swab at all. Should I do this at equal intervals during the day or after each feeding? I know you said 4 times ins't enough. I should say that she doesn't have any symptoms of thrush at this point. Can I give her the acidophilus mixed in with water? She didn't enjoy licking it off my finger.

The directions on the Nystatin ointment say to apply 2-3 times... should I do so after each feeding? Should I be wearing nursing pads over it or is it better if I don't? And where do I apply the ointment? I have been doing it all over the nipple & areola which is what hurts. I did both sides even though only the left one hurts. I hope that's right. I will take two of the acidophilus pills three times a day.

I'm going to go read all the other links and will probably be back with more questions. THANKS PAULA!!!

Pati-

Is there a way to get a better dosage of the Fluzoncale (Diflucan)? THe one pill dose isn't going to do anything. Is there an LC that you can speak with to try and get to the doc if he won't listen to you?

http://www.kellymom.com/newman/20fluconazole.html

It needs to be a 10 day script. Perhaps the other stuff is enough, but it's better to be safe than sorry, I think.

And as Paula said, the amount of times they are telling you to treat the nystatin won't be enough. After EVERY nursing session. Remember, it grows back after 90 minutes.

Follow up if you have more ?S
