Weaning from the pump

I have a few questions about how to pump less but maintain supply. My baby is 10.5 months old and on the 3 full days together he nurses at least 6 times, often up to 8 times a day (and sleeps from 7 p to 6:30 a). I work 4 days a week and am away from him for 10 hrs each day. Before I leave he nurses twice and when I return he nurses twice. Our nanny says that recently he is drinking less milk during the day, but always gets at least 10 oz (and sometimes will drink 12-15 oz). H eats 2 solid meals a day (breakfast and lunch, and no dinner and no snacks. He drinks minimal water with his meals and has no other liquids (other than BM). I pump 3 x at work and once at 9:30 pm before bed b/c I tried and tried to cut that session out and could never sleep well due to feeling too full. I get anywhere from 12-15 oz from my 3 work pumping sessions, and 3-4 oz from my evening session. I donate what I don't use to a milk bank and always have fresh milk for my baby--have never needed the freezer stash. So I would like to cut down to pumping first only 2x at work and after he is 12 months only 1x. Is this realistic? I would like to keep nursing past a year so want to maintain a good supply, I am just so sick of pumping. Would it be safe to cut down to 2x now? I should also add that I do not want to add cow's milk at 12 months.

I'm so sorry we missed this one!!!

Yes, if I were you, I would definitely try pumping just twice during the day and see how you're doing with output. FWIW, I always pumped twice during the workday and ended up with enough for 3 bottles just because I'm one of those people who responds well to the pump.

Cut back and see how it goes and if you're not comfortable with what you're getting, you can always add a session back in. What you're giving sounds absolutely on track though. Also WTG for donating to a milk bank!! What a wonderful start you're giving other babies!!

Sorry again for missing this one!

If you also want to drop the night time session,

I would not drop it cold turkey if it makes you too uncomfortable. I would cut back and pump for a shorter time, and get a bit less milk. Then continue to cut back gradually enough that you do not get too engorged, and let your body adjust that way.

Thanks! Right now I can't cut out a daytime session b/c he just started teething again and is on a bit of a strike so I am pretty uncomfortable. Hopefully once this teething spell is over I can cut down.

Thank you for the tip!
What I'll do eventually is cut back the pumping time from 10 minutes to 9 and so on--I'll do it very slowly of course. I am so sick of pumping!
