hello,

i am hearing varying opinions on when to give solids. Lo is 6.5 months old and has been on solids now. he likes pretty much what he gets (but for water!!!!). But my question is, when should he be getting his solids?

We usually recommend to breastfeed or bottle feed your expressed breast milk first and then give the solids.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics baby should start solids around six months but that breast milk should continue to be the baby's primary food for the first year......meaning breast milk is the more important food to emphasize.

Hope this helps.

I was looking more for time between his feed (bottle/nurse) and giviing solids. we are currently doing the bottle and then solids, but at times, the solids are being given 2 hours after the bottle.

I would probably not wait that long. Keep it around an hour or even less.

If you wait two hours, he will be very hungry by then, and really fill up on solids, and end up going longer between feeds, and also not drinking enough milk next time round.

At this age, solids are meant to be small amounts and for taste, rather than a major source of food. At two hours after the bottle, the solid feed is likely to end up being a lot more than he should probably be having in solids.

Oops, sorry. I don't think there's any specific amount of time but I would say about 1/2 to 1 hour. I agree that it's probably not a good idea to wait too long or the solids will end up replacing a breast milk feeding session.
