In the last couple of weeks I've started introducing the potty to my almost one year old. She comes with me into the bathroom after morning wake up and naps, sits on her potty while I'm on the "big" potty. I know it is unusual in North America to start before 18 months or 2 years so I'm just wondering if anyone else out there is doing something similar or has in the past. Diapering her is a nightmare (she is too busy) so I figured the earlier she can go in a potty, the easier for me lol.

I think diapering misery is common.

Thanks for your reply. I read up on EC a few months ago and while I see a lot of merit to it, it's just really not something that will fit into our lifestyle. We've been at it for about 1.5 to 2 weeks and we've had some sporadic success. The last three days though she has used the potty every time in the morning and after her nap! She has even pooped twice! I'm thrilled. It's just become part of the daily routine. Yesterday I put her on an extra time and although she didn't go, she did toot so I think she was trying :-). I'm not looking to have her trained very quickly or anything (she is definitely in diapers day and night) but I think we will have an easier time if she is used to going in the potty. I will keep looking for message boards, etc to connect with other early pottiers :-).
It sounds like your DS is going to be off to a good start if he is so used to the bathroom being part of the day. Good luck with his training,

What you're describing is EC :) but you can call it whatever you like, it has many names. We have EC'd all three kids. Our youngest is 15 months now. He does pretty well with a little potty next to the big one! He is a busy one as well, squirms too much for diapering. My DD was out of diapers at this age which was SUPER so keep trying you could be done with diapers before you know it. I like the Gerber brand padded undies, those seem to really help them figure it out. Most people in America wait until at least 3 years of age! That never made sense to me. There is a book called Early Potty Training (?) that I have flipped through while a friend used it, very nice book.

Ah I thought EC was to be started in early infancy and really watching for signs from baby. I really just take DD after she wakes (morning and nap) and a couple more times when I have to go. I like that she's not in another room fussing for me while I'm trying to go and cleanup/diapering is easier. Whatever we call it, she seems into it. We went to the mall today with a small potty. She used it and cleanup was quick. Right now we are sort of going on a schedule but hopefully as she grows she will learn to initiate it in a way I can distinguish :-). I want her used to the potty and using it. If she gets out of diapers soon thats a great bonus.

Mommie2corbin, when did you start EC with your DD and DS? Does what I'm doing sound okay (diapers 24/7, potty at likely times but without signals from her) or am I making a mistake? When did you start using the Gerber pants? Sorry to flood you with questions but I haven't come across many BTDT moms. DD is doing so well, I would hate to be unintentionally causing problems.
