Loooooong pumping sessions
Sun, 05-12-2013 - 4:26pm

I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for making pumping sessions shorter: I currently pump 5 times a day, about 12 oz per session (pumping for twins) and it takes between 45 min and an hour, at which point I just stop. There is no emptying or pumping 5 min after the last drop- I just pump until I have enough and then stop. Flow comes and goes in the left breast and remains very slow and steady in the right (my milk dud), but never actually completely stops. I use pumpin pals, and I have the pump on the highest suction I can stand. I have tried larger size and smaller size shields, and slower and faster settings, and to no avail. Massage helps a little, but not enough to cut out much time. I am going back to work tomorrow and working in 45 min pumping sessions is so not happening!!

Thos are loooooong pumping sessions. I did a google search and Kelly Mom suggests pumping for no longer than 15 minutes at a time.  Have you thought about cutting back on your time a bit at a time?  See how your body reacts?

I got the same answer from the LC I talked to, not pumping more than about 20. She recommended still pumping the longest in the morning and one other time to try and keep up supply.

I'm so happy I read your post, as I'm doing exactly the same thing. I also have twins and was advised to pump until my breasts are empty, but after more than 5 months I find myself pumping on average 45min, up to 1 hour when I dodnt pump for several hours inbetween. I have just gone back to work too and not sure how much longer I can keep up pumping as indeed it is hard to pump for so long during work, even with the handsfree pumpbra. I'm have now started to cut back the time to 30-35min and dropped from 5 to 4 pumps a day. Actually noticing an uptake in my milksupply because there are longer intervals between pumping session. Also I find that I'm getting the most milk in the first 15-20min, but then it goes much slower, with small spurts inbetween. You are not alone, and I'm happy to know I'm not the only crazy fanatic mom out there who is pumping so much and sooooooooooo long.
