Biting and Pulling when BFing

Hi all,

My EP journey started because my DS absolutely destroyed my nipples and put me into tears when feeding. Not because he had a bad latch—on the contrary every nurse, LC, and my midwife said he had a perfect latch. But because he would bite and pull on my nipple every time he tried to eat, he was a stop-and-start eater because he fell asleep so much and we always had to wake him up a million times, but every time he woke up to eat again he would bite and pull on my nipple! It was torture. Just wondering why he was doing this if anyone knows?

I wish I knew! :) My daughter did something similar! The LCs in the hospital said her latch looked good, although when she came of the breast my nipple was flattened. I was told I had "great breastfeeding anatomy, " so it was not an inverted nipple issue or anything like that. She would go on and off, on and off.... I eventually got a wound on my right nipple that needed to be cultured. So she never did have an effective latch. I think she did not transfer milk well? I made plenty of milk...it would just drip. But it just seemed like her suck and swallow was not quite there. Once I started pumping, she gulped my milk because I think she was SO hungry. I continued to try BFing with no success. It has been 10 months of EPing now and I am proud to say that! :) Happy pumping!
