Hi there!

My son is 6 weeks old and it's been a rough start. I have flat inverted nipples and my son wouldn't latch properly. We had to wait 2 weeks to get into a lactation consultant who just promptly put me on a nipple shield. No real explanation, we did one feeding together at her office and she sent me on my merry way. The nipple shield killed my nipples, I'm still recovering from the pain of it 3.5 weeks later. I gave up on the shield and only use it if I really have to (aka out and have no milk ready), I have been pumping now for 6 weeks and it's going well.

I use a Medela Pump in Style pump and getting about 4-5 oz every 3 hours. It's exhausting work but at least I know I'm not alone anymore.

Quick question about the nipple shield: what brand is it? The Medea ones are best because they are thin and flexible. Avent makes one that is way too thick and I wonder if maybe you had a bad quality one. Also they come in a few different sizes and my LC told me to only try the biggest ones, the rest are way too small for most women. Since you still use them from time to time, you may want to get the 26mm Medea nipple shields unless that's what you already have. I used this shield for about 3 or 4 weeks when I worked to get my baby back to the breast after EPing. Since I didn't encounter nipple pain, I wondered if maybe the shield wasn't right for you.

Good luck and congrats on your LO.
