Hey to everybody out there,

I found this forum through kelley mom and I think this is an amazing place, that has been very informative. I have been reading and studying for days and have finally gathered all the questions I want to ask and would love everyones input! I have a 1 year old as of yesterday and a 6 week old so needless to say I have my hands full. I am also a nurse but am still on maternity leave for a few more weeks. With my 1yr old I tried BF but my milk never came in and stopped after 2 weeks I was the typical new mom afraid for anyone to see me BF, etc. But with our 6 week old I have had few problems but we are hanging in there but with in the last week I have begun EPing. He was initially severally jaundice and was in and out of Dr office and hospital now we are having weight gaining issues. I would try and try to feed him at the breast but he would just fall asleep or never really sucked good so I have found he does much better with the bottle. When he was BF I was pumping and storing but I have since had to use my stash because I had a decrease in my milk supply on top of everything else. I have been on feenegreuk and blessed thisle for a 11/2 week. I have increased my pumping to every 3 hours when possible. The longest I go is 6 hours. I have started pumping between 1-4 am, list goes on and on I have had an increase in supply but its still not enough I average between 5-10 oz a day and my LO is taking 4oz every 3 hours so I have to supplement a lot. What else can I do, I want to keep trying but I am really run down between the two LOs. When I pump I average 45 min each session because thats about how long it takes until the last drop. Is that to long each session? I also read where some people spray, I don't I slowly drip is that normal or should I spray (I do spray sometimes but not very often) I have to turn up the suction to experience that. Also if I am doing all of this now to get what little bit I get what do I do when I go back to work as a nurse and am only allowed 15 min in the am and pm and it takes that long to get to the allowed room and set up? Can't wait to hear from y'all!!!

I am a nurse too! :) I only work PRN, but when I work, I pump right before I leave, then on lunch, and right when I get home. I work at a clinic, so it is never longer than a 9-10 hour day. I definitely need a good thirty minutes to set up, pump, and put it all away during my lunchtime pump. I am not sure what your work situation is like. But I believe your employer is required by law to give you the time you need to pump. (But I know how crazy nursing can be...) Could you combine your two 15 minute breaks to get a longer pump in?

It sound like you are doing all of the right things to increase your milk supply. I would think since you are still establishing your supply, perhaps try not to go longer than 4 hours at this point if you can? But that is easy for me to say because I do not have a one year old to look after too! :) I am at month 4 now. And during the day I finally am at the point where I pump every 4-5 hours...maybe 5-6 hours at night...depending on how long baby sleeps.

Every body is different and I am sure some women spray and some drip. I would say keep pumping as often as you can. You could try power pumping where you pump on/off for 10 minutes here and 10 minutes there to increase your supply. (I have never tried it...but some seem to find it effective). And some breastmilk is better than none! Good luck!
