Hello, I'm new to EP after having mastitis repeatedly while BF my 1st daughter, then getting it again with my 2nd (4 wks tomo) & hoping I might be able to avoid it with regular pumping.

I've been EP since stopping BF on Sunday, baby is draining bottles of 120, 140, 160ml... every 2-3 hours. I want to demand feed but it seems if I put more in the bottle she'll just drink it all, seemingly without limit! So my question is whether I should work out how much she "should" be drinking according to online calculators based on her weight, or just keep putting more in the bottle assuming she'll stop when she's full. What do other people do? Thanks in advance for any help.

I have always filled the bottle for either more or at least what I think that my LO will drink.

same here a pp. my dd drinks more in one sitting at certain feedings too, if she finishes the bottle to the last drop i offer more. sometimes she only takes two swigs, sometimes she chugs another 2oz. i dont think babies will overfeed themselves. also i think i read somewhere not to use online calcs as they are made for formula? maybe i read that in the beginners guide here? i say when i doubt, offer more. good luck!

You might want to check out some of this information about how to do a paced bottlefeeding:

Australian BFing Association - Caregiver's Guide to the Breastfed Baby
Kellymom - Bottlefeeding the BF baby
Kellymom - How much EBM does my BF baby need?

For a baby who nurses on demand, the milk doesn't all come at once and there are sequential let-downs so that the baby has to keep working to get more milk.
