hi all,

My baby just turned one month and ive been exclusively pumpingnow. I had issues with the latch from the beginning. And then recently had mastitis. That's when I decided that I would exclusively pump. I'm a little nervous as I hope I'm doing the right thing and am able to get enough supply.

I pump 8 times during a 24 hour period. Should I be pumping to empty out my breasts or just pump for 15-20 mins? I've heard both ways. Or do I just mimick when baby is feeding? She is quite a big baby and eats around 36-40 oz a day (I think she might have had a growth spurt). Her one month check up was great (weight was 75th percentile).
Right now, I have to supplement around 4oz with formula.

Can someone please advise as to how I need to make sure that my supply increases and can cope up w/ her demand?

Thanks so much!!

Welcome to the board! The first thing you should do is check out the beginner's guide (I bumped it up to the top of the roll call section). Tons of info!

Pumping 8x a day is the right way to go. I would pump until empty because the more empty you are, the more milk you will make. It sounds like your baby eats a ton (mine topped out at 28 ounces around 3 months and she was 75th percentile in weight for a long time), so I would say pump till empty because you will build a really great supply, freeze some, and then be able to meet her demand later when you cut down on pumps if she gets ahead of you. Especially if you are supplementing now, I would say pump till empty so that you can increase your supply.

It sounds like you are on the right track and doing a great job! Keep it up!
