Pumping pain the first minute?

Hi - This is my second child and once again, I am exclusively pumping. The first time, I was able to pump for a year and a half. I was very proud of this accomplishment and I can only hope I can do the same for this baby. So far, it's definitely much harder this time around with 2 kids, no sleep, and pumping pain. So hard and tiring!!!

I am pumping 7-9 times a day and finally, my milk supply seems ok. I pump about 40 oz a day. Baby is now 2 weeks old so he has enough supply and we've started freezing. The question I have is this... do any of you experience pain at the beginning of your pump sessions? The first minute where your nipples are tugged at. Is this normal? I don't remember but each time I turn on the pump, I just want to scream but then the pain dissipates and it just becomes a normal session. The suction is extra hard so I wonder if it's just that plus sensitive nipples? I want to make sure I don't have thrush... no unusual pain other then when pumping the first minute.

Any others experiencing the same thing? Thank you!!!

One more thing - it is very sensitive when I take a shower. If the water touches the nipples or the towel that I am drying off with, OUCH!!!!! When my clothes are on and nursing pad, all is fine. Normal soreness?

What you are describing sounds perfectly normal. The pain during the first min or 2 is the collagen in your nipples stretching. It should go away after a few mins. If it is too uncomfortable, slowly increase suction over the first min.

Your nipples will be super sensitive for a few weeks to a month depending on the person. So being a little uncomfortable in the shower is normal.

just an fyi... I have switched over to a different style of sheild. They are called pumpin pals, you can get them on amazon.com.   I love them and they made a world of difference for me.

good luck!
