Storage on ice packs
Wed, 08-29-2012 - 2:18am

I pump at work and store the milk in my little medela bag with its ice pack.  I would appreciate input about how long people have safely let the milk sit at room temperature with the ice pack.  The reason I'm asking is because yesterday I changed my routine and pumped at a conference.  I got distracted when I got home and left the milk in the pump bag until 2AM.  Therefore the milk sat for 12-15 hours.  I only pump enough to keep up with my son's daily needs, so I don't have a stash as backup, but I'm unsure if this milk is safe to use.

Thank you,

Were the icepacks still cold? Milk can sit out at room temp 8-10 hours, so it's likely fine. Just give it a taste first - you will know if it's bad :smileywink:

I have left milk out for 8hrs with no ice pack, no problem. Around the 10hr mark one time it did go bad (I had forgotten a bottle in the diaper bag). You should be able to tell by smell (or taste as the previous poster suggested) if it has gone bad, and babies won't drink spoiled milk.
