I am just wondering if this is even possible...

If I want to pump "half-time" so to speak and supplement with formula for the other half, how would I go about establishing supply?

I think u would still need to pump 8-10 times a day.

Ive been pumping for twins for 12 months. It is a lot of work, but its very worth it! Im glad i decided to do this! Besides formula is way too expensive.

Good luck!

since breastmilk is based on supply and demand, i would think that if you are already planning on supplimenting, that you would not have to pump that often in the first 12 weeks. the only reason you pump 8-10 times is to signal your body that the baby is eating (bfing) 8-10 times. if you only pumped 5-6 times then your body would only make enough for that and you would have to suppliment. i would pump at least 8 times a day until your supply fully comes in, then maybe slowly decrease down to 5-6 or however many you want. you dont want to get an oversupply then have to

Part-time pumping can work but it might be difficult to maintain the supply long term. You might have no trouble part time pumping and keeping your supply but if you are set on a long term goal past 6 months it is important to pump 8-12 times a day.

Check out this link about milk supply and how it works:

Overall your body produces milk based on demand but there are some key hormonal changes post-partum that also affect supply. The link above explains it really well so you can be better prepared.

The most important thing is to make sure you have a good quality pump ready for you in the hospital and for when you get home, a hands-free pumping bra to use
