Bear with my poll, if I've completely missed things that should be there--I've never BF or pumped significantly, so I am not familiar with the issues that can arise. But, I post this poll because it's one of my biggest fears! I guess it's related to the fact that I tend to be a perfectionist, and fear anything ever going wrong with something I want to do (in this case, EP).

I see posts here and on other boards about things like mastitis, etc., and I wonder just how common it is among the entire BF/EP population! I thought maybe it will make me feel better to (1) see it is not so common or (2) see that it is common, but not so bad!?

I voted that I had cracked nipples in the beginning because it was pretty bad until I started lubricating them with olive oil before pumping.

I had a big problem with her latch; she would get the whole nipple and a lot of the areola in her mouth, but still would only put suction on a small part of my nipple, so I got blood blisters and had a lot of pain on that small part. Pumping is actually way less painful than breastfeeding for me!

^Haha^ you and I are so alike. I'm a damned perfectionist too. I craft/knit a lot and one day I was talking about what I do to relax. I said to her "Read.". She said "Oh, I thought you crafted and stuff?". And I said "I do. But that's not relaxing--it's STRESSFUL!".

I only had pain in the beginning, but that could be contributed to three things:

1. Before I got here, all I had to go on was the pump manual. The pump manual said it was best to pump at the highest suction I could tolerate. Well, I could technically "tolerate" the highest one. Doh! Even now it's only at a 7 out of 10.

2. I didn't know about the olive oil trick. And I was using 24 softfits. The softfits have a seam where the soft part meets the hard part. I was having major rubbage! I switched to 30 regulars. Ahh...

3. I'm allergic to lanolin. All of them. Even the hypoallergenic ones.

Other than that, I only battled about 4/5 clogs around 2-4 months in. I had a wicked oversupply. That wasn't helping. As nervous as I was when I got them, they always came out. I just microwaved a damp towel and pumped/massaged.

I've never had thrush or mastitis. I know it seems like a lot of people have problems, but who really posts "Hey, everything's great and I'm having no issues!" so, you only hear from the problem side.

Just be sure your bra is clean and not too tight. I love the Bravado Body Silk. Always wash your hands before pumping. Keep your boobs/nipples clean and use rubbing alcohol on anything that is open. Cracks, sores, etc.

Oh, one more thing. I have permanent what looks like blood blisters. They showed up one day, and never left. They don't hurt or affect anything. My nips just look like little raspberries when I'm done. Then they flatten out and only come back when I pump next. IDK? Whatever. = )

LOL! Exactly! Thank you for all of that info.--super helpful. Those are the things I feel like I don't know and don't want to "find out" for myself, LOL. I always want to know it all before doing anything.

I use the softfit breastshields sometimes. I lather them and my nipples with olive oil so they slide. It feels more comfortable. I have an overabundant supply (average of 50 -55 oz/day) so if I go too long or don't pump completely, I get clogged ducts. I've gotten about 4 since I started EP. Part of it was my fault, trying to lower production, trying to sleep through the night, not pumping enough, etc. I really had best success with massaging with my hands and then with a hand held massager, bath with hot water and massaging, and allowing gravity to help. Sometimes I'll lean so that my nipples are pointed to the floor and the clog comes out. I always panic when I get a clog because I don't want to get an infection. But so far so good :-)
