Twins preemie epumping volume?

I had twins at 30 weeks 3 weeks ago and have been ep since birth. I currently pump 8 times a day every three hours, and have been averaging about 43-45 oz a day which has remained consistent for about a week. However, I have priced that I do to make as much volume a pumping session unles I'm kind of power pumping. 10 or 15 on, 10 off, at least three times. Used to get the same volume without having to do this. Is my supply going down? What is a normal output for twin mama ep at three weeks pp? When should it increase?

It sounds like you are doing great at this point.  Best way to increase production is to pump more...both time and frequency.  How long this takes to increase your production can vary from person to person.  Some respond almost immediately, others it can takes days or even a week.

A friend of mine EP'd for months while her twin boys were in the NICU as micro premies (God bless them--born at 24 weeks, less than 2 pounds each, and both are doing great now!!).  I am basing this only on what I know she did, but she was told (and did) 10-14 pumping sessions per day of about 20 minutes each.  The NICU nurses suggested she aim for 44-54ounces per day total.  When they were teeny-tiny, she was able to bank much of it for later.  As they got older and started eating close to normal quantities she broke even and used some of her frozen bank.  Somewhere around 5 months, she started taking donations to help keep them on EBM until they were medically cleared to start solids since they had some slight delays.

Hope that helps!!

Hi Chrissy, My twin girls will be 5 months next week and I've been EPing since they were in the NICU. I don't remember exactly how much I was making at 3 weeks pp because I was still trying to BF both and pump, so my nipples were stimulated all of the time. But I remember my milk really started coming in around day 5. During their second week of life I had graduated from taking syringes full of BM to the NICU to taking the 4 oz bottles they supplied me. And when I brought the last twin home from the NICU at 14 days old, I was having a huge oversupply at that point. I'd say I was making 40-45 oz a day at that time, and even at 3 weeks it was that much more...maybe 45-50 oz. At close to 5 months, I'm only making 54-60 oz a day. But it's more than enough for both of them because they are snackers. Sometimes I can get my biggest to eat 5 oz max and the little one maxes out at 4 oz a feeding on a good day. For me, I have to pump 30-60 mins to make this amount. I'm still pumping 7 times a day (every 3-4 hrs with a 5 hr stretch at night). It's weird because sometimes I can pump 8-10 oz total in 20 mins, then the next time it will take 45 mins. But, I have learned to drink, drink, drink and eat, eat eat. Good luck to you. You are doing an amazing thing for your babies!!!! I'm so proud of you!!!
